The Driving Instructor Examination Process

To become an ADI there are three Tests conducted by the DVSA, details of which are set out below together with how we will help you prepare fully for each one.

Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in the UK is a structured process overseen by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). The qualification journey comprises three distinct parts:

  1. ADI Part 1: Theory TestThis initial stage assesses your knowledge of driving theory and hazard perception. The test consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, divided into four categories, and you must achieve a minimum score in each to pass. Additionally, you’ll undertake a hazard perception test, which evaluates your ability to identify potential hazards on the road. The combined pass mark is 85 out of 100. You have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the multiple-choice section.
  2. ADI Part 2: Driving Ability TestThis practical test evaluates your driving skills across various road and traffic conditions. You’ll need to demonstrate a high level of technical proficiency, anticipation, and awareness. The test includes an eyesight check, two reversing manoeuvres, and a controlled stop. It’s essential to showcase safe and expert driving techniques throughout the assessment.
  3. ADI Part 3: Instructional Ability TestIn this final stage, your teaching skills are assessed. The test lasts approximately 45 minutes, during which you’ll be evaluated on 17 areas of competence grouped into three categories: lesson planning, risk management, and teaching/learning strategies. Each competency is scored between 0 and 3, and your total score determines your grade.

Each test will be covered in detail as you complete our training course, if you require more information at this stage please don´t hesitate to contact us at info@orditinstructortraining.co.uk or call 0333 577 8110
